When Philip Mould met Rolf Harris
06 November 2009
Philip Mould OBE, art ‘sleuth’ and Antiques Roadshow expert, welcomed Rolf Harris CBE among the many supporters who attended an evening reception in aid of eye research charity Fight for Sight.
120 art enthusiasts and Fight for Sight supporters, including painter and TV personality Rolf Harris, attended the fundraising reception hosted by Philip Mould at his Dover Street gallery. Guests were invited to browse the gallery’s impressive collection which includes some of Thomas Gainsborough’s early works. A lively talk by Philip Mould gave guests an insight into the world of an art connoisseur and a taste of his new book 'SLEUTH: The Amazinq Quest for Lost Art Treasures'. The fundraising reception raised around £6,000 for Fight for Sight.
Fight for Sight is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to funding world-class research into the prevention and treatment of blindness and eye disease. Over the past 44 years, research funded by the charity has saved the sight of thousands of premature babies by understanding and controlling levels of oxygen delivery, and has restored the sight of thousands of people by establishing the UK Corneal Transplant Service. Funds raised from the reception will help to fund future eye research.
Michèle Acton, Fight for Sight’s Chief Executive, was delighted with the evening: “We are very grateful for Philip Mould’s hospitality and for the support and dedication of our London Committee, chaired by trustee John Hannaford, who organised the event. We are delighted our long-term supporter and patron Rolf Harris and his wife, Alwen, were able to attend, and that the event provided an opportunity for two of the great names in the art world to meet. ”

• revolutionising the treatment for children with amblyopia (lazy eye);
• bringing hope to children with inherited eye disease by helping fund the team responsible for the world’s first gene therapy clinical trial; and
• providing £1million for the research unit at the dedicated children’s eye centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital.
Fight for Sight’s current research programme of over £5 million focuses on preventing and treating age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataract as well as causes of childhood blindness.
