Leaving a gift in your Will

Believe it's possible

The idea of a world without sight loss may sound impossible, the stuff of science fiction.

However, we believe it really is possible. Advances in areas such as stem cell research, gene therapy and molecular biology are turning science fiction into science fact.

The science is there

One in five of us will experience significant sight loss at some point in our lives. There are two million people in the UK currently affected by sight loss and this is set to double by 2050. This is one of the biggest health challenges we face as a country.

Many of us are personally affected, or have loved ones who are experiencing sight loss through age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma and inherited degenerative conditions. Beyond these key disease areas, investigating our eye health can help us diagnose a range of other conditions including anaemia, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Today, there is no treatment for around 90 percent of cases of AMD and we can't undo the damage caused by glaucoma - the second leading cause of blindness in the UK - unless we catch it early enough. The challenges are great, but so are the extraordinary science and exceptional talent. Leading scientists like Professor Rachael Pearson, Dr Jacqueline van der Spuy, Dr Ben Mead and so many others are making amazing advances in these areas.

The need for research like this is evident. The science is there. The talent is there. A gift in your Will may be the final piece of the jigsaw.

An immeasurable gift to future generations

Around one third of all the money we spend on research comes from gifts in Wills. That is why your contribution is so important.

To leave a gift to Fight for Sight, we recommend that you either speak with your own solicitor, or if you are over 55 you can use our Free Will Writing Service, provided through the National Free Wills Network.

They can help ensure that you provide adequately for those who mean most to you and help you to make sure that the causes you really care about are catered for in your Will.

You can do that either by leaving a specific sum in your Will as a donation, or by first making sure all those people who matter are looked after, and then donating what is left over. A professional will help you decide.

We really are on the cusp of incredible breakthroughs. The discoveries we are making now would have seemed impossible a generation ago. We’ve come so far, imagine where science could take us in another generation.

A special gift in your Will could make all the difference.
