Raising vital funds for eye research

Despite battling with her sight, partially sighted fundraiser, Debbie White, 51, from Warwick, is organising a charity golf day to support Fight for Sight, which raises money for the UK’s main eye research charity.

The annual event is in its 22nd year and will take place on 6 July, at Stoneleigh Deer Park Golf Club, Warwickshire. Debbie is organising the event with Clive Stone, who was the original mastermind behind the event.

It will be an exciting week as Clive, celebrates his 80th birthday the following day. Clive has been heavily involved in promoting the ‘fight for sight’ having qualified as an optometrist in 1962 and was a Trustee of the charity for over 35 years and is currently Vice President.

Debbie has been involved with the charity for the past two decades and knows first-hand the devastating impact sight loss can cause. Debbie and her brother were diagnosed with a condition called Usher syndrome II, which causes hearing impairment and progressive vision loss due to retinitis pigmentosa.

The condition causes tunnel vision and night blindness and before Debbie’s sight become progressively worse, she was a keen golfer. Debbie said: “When you start losing your sight, you start losing your independence, especially as I can’t drive and I can’t really go out at night on my own without assistance. Giving up playing competitive golf was incredibly difficult too, so I was keen to help organise the charity golf event.”

Debbie also has cataracts forming and has astigmatism of the eye said: “Its incredible people just disregard my disability because it appears that I look normal. I want to raise awareness so more people understand the condition. Fight for Sight is an incredible charity funding research into my condition and that’s why it’s so important to raise the money to help support eye research.”

The day will include a three course meal after the 18 hole challenge plus 'prize every time' tombola, fun putting competition and the auction of promises kindly donated by our supporters. A special thank you to SpecSavers for sponsoring the day.
