Researchers think it could become an alternative to existing treatments

Here in the Fight for Sight office we’ve spotted what we think might be the Marmite of eye treatments. Researchers have discovered that human breast milk helps wound-healing in cornea’s outer layer. The cornea is the clear front surface of the eye and its outer layer is called the epithelium.

Results published in Current Eye Research show that eye drops of human breast milk worked faster and better than either artificial tears or a serum developed from blood, at healing the corneal epithelium in mice. Love the idea or loath it, the researchers think that the rich content of breast milk could make it a good option for treatment.
