Going the distance for Fight for Sight

Exeter runner Amber Grierson, 25, will go the distance for the UK’s main eye research charity Fight for Sight, at the Virgin London Marathon, on Sunday 24 April.

Amber who nearly lost her sight in 2010 will be joining thousands of runners to take on the gruelling 26.2 mile challenge across London city.

Having had problems with her sight since an early age she received her first pair of glasses, from Jeremy Savage opticians, Tiverton, when she was two-years-old, moving on to contact lenses aged 13. At 19 she nearly lost her sight in her right eye after going travelling and developing a corneal ulcer. She had to use steroid eye drops every 20 minutes for a two week period and was fortunate that her vision could be saved and she is able to continue to wear contact lenses.

Amber, who works as a legal secretary for Ashfords Solicitors LLP, said: “Ever since I was born I have battled with short sightedness and I can remember the relief of being able to see properly after getting my first pair of glasses. It was Christmas time and I was amazed by the lights. Having had that episode in 2010 I’m extremely grateful for my sight and it highlights the importance of taking care of your eyes and how more eye research is needed – that’s why I wanted to run and help support Fight for Sight.”

This will be the furthest Amber has run having previously completed the Great West Run and Bideford Half for charity.

Catherine Woodhead, Director of Fundraising at Fight for Sight, said: "We would like to wish Amber the best of luck with her training and for choosing to raise awareness and vital funds for Fight for Sight.

A huge thank you to Amber and all our other runners for taking part in this year's marathon and literally going that extra mile for Fight for Sight. Good luck and we will be there to cheer you on every step of the way."
